Silent guitar
This is a wonderful invention. I got mine from Playaway Guitars.
It can be taken to pieces for travel. Not only is it really small, but unlike a proper guitar there is no need to worry about the occasional knock. Its main use for me is the silent aspect - my husband works nights, so using this I can play whenever I want. It can be plugged into an amp to sound at normal levels, but in a quiet room the volume is fine for normal practice without headphones. If someone is making a noise in the next room I can't hear myself play, but that is hardly a problem.
I found myself thinking of the space on this as a blank canvas. Decoration on a normal guitar can affect the sound or the finish, but not on this one.

A patchwork cover
This was my first attempt. I drew round the frame on a large piece of paper to make a template. Then I made 2 copies of each piece:
- On the first I drew out a random patchwork design using pencil & a ruler. I numbered all the squares.
- Then I made a copy of the design onto the second template, with the numbers on the wrong side.
- I cut up the second template & used it for foundation pieces for the patchwork. When sewing it together I had the original numbered design to work out what went where.
- I quilted along the seam lines.
- Once I had the flat pieces done, I joined them by sewing them to a ribbon to form a side panel.
Mixed embroidery
This is an adaptation of the original templates. I cut the pieces from canvas, which I coloured at random with fabric paints before embroidering with a variety of threads & stitches.
This cover is held on with ribbons. I'm going to improve that soon.

I'm knitting an aran cover at the moment.
